Driving a vehicle in the country that we travel is an option which we can go to our destination quicker and sometimes cheaper, especially if we travel in group. But, not all in the world accept Malaysia driving licence especially old version which do not have details in English. For newer version that have details in English, there will additional countries will accept it especially ASEAN (South East Asia) countries and majority Commonwealth countries.
But, for countries that not include both organisation, it possible that they do not accept Malaysia driving licence especially the countries do not use English as their main or working or official language. Even though in ASEAN, there were some incidents, the polices gave fine and also detained the people who do not have valid driving licence in that countries, although there are an agreement among ASEAN (Agreement on the Recognition of Domestic Driving Licences Issued by ASEAN Countries) which been signed in year of 1985.

Car rental company in the visiting country usually will ask for valid driving licence for that country. One method to get valid driving licence is to follow the procedure from the beginning, which is to learn how to drive, then take and pass the examination of driving. Or we can exchange our existing driving licence to local driving licence, if it avaiable. Both of these methods quite expensive and it only can be done if we will be resided at that country for more than 3 months.
Best way for pay more and for journey less than 3 months in that country is to apply International Driving Permit at Road Transport Department (JPJ - Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan). It very easy and cheap, just RM150.00 only for one year. If at Kuala Lumpur, among JPJ office will process the IDP application is Federal Territory Road Transport Department office at Wangsa Maju, beside other other small branches.

Before we apply for the permit, we should know, the documents needed to accompany the application. The documents are:
1. 1 photocopy of MyKad (for Malaysia nationality) or pasport (for non Malaysian);
2. 1 photocopy of driving licence;
3. 1 copy of personal photo in pasport size with white background (please refer the format as below);

The form can be taken at the counter or if want to be prepared earlier, can click at the link above to download the form and print it after that. The form is free of charge. That form need to be completed in Part A (to put kod 0 4 in the box), Part B (personal details, please complete all fields), Part C3 (fill in licence number and driving classes that we have) and Part D. That sign the form and date it.
Make sure bring all original documents (MyKad/Passport and driving licence) also beside the documents needed as above, for JPJ officer verification while the application process.

While our number had been called, surrender all the documents with the completed form and also RM150.00 to the counter staff. The staff will enter the data in the computer system and then write down some details in a book. That book is the IDP before all that will be taken to the officer for aproval.
Not long after that, less then 5 minutes, the staff will give us the payment receipt and also our IDP. Please check if any mistake in the IDP and the receipt. That it, very easy and fast.

So, that the process to apply IDP. So, after get the IDP, our driving licence can be use not just in Malaysia, but also majority countries in the world. With this permit, we can drive with more calm and peaceful, because our worry not to be fine or detain is no more.
